Everything gets more expensive in life. First there’s almost constant gas prices above $3 (I remember when I first got my license filling up for 75 cents a gallon). Now, there’s peanut butter. It was reported this week that it will go up as much as 40% thanks to a hot, dry summer that ravaged the peanut crop across the south.
And, it appears that political campaigns are no different. This election cycle has been by far the most expensive I’ve ever seen for non-statewide/federal offices… in other words races for the House of Delegates and State Senate. Many of the competitive races, if not all, are dealing in hundreds of thousands of dollars with big time donations from state leaders and the parties. This has resulted in even inexperienced, first time candidates having the money to advertise on TV, send out mailers, and run real, credible campaigns.
Many decry money in politics. But, what I have seen this election cycle is refreshing. If a first time candidate who is 25-years-old has the money to get his message out, I figure that is a good thing. It can only mean a more informed electorate come election day.
