People need to remember that football is just a game

The football world was up in arms Monday night over a smiling and laughing quarterback.

The player in question is Arizona Cardinals QB Derek Anderson, who apparently was laughing on the sidelines during the Cardinals loss to the lowly San Francisco 49ers. The commentators and fans were critical of him for not being more upset over his team’s performance.

Give me a break! Folks, this is not a battle in Fallujah. It’s not a riot on the streets of an American city. It’s a football game. Yes, the last word is important: “game.” It’s entertainment. Geez.

Now, I’m not defending all of Anderson’s actions. When asked about “smile-gate” during the post-game news conference, Anderson exploded. He used curse words and stormed off.

Grow up. Answer the reporter’s question and play it off. The question, while reasonable, could have been as easily deflected as one of Anderson’s passes.

This behavior gets to a larger point. I deal with irate Hokie fans all the time. Watching a game in the newsroom requires earplugs… as some fans take the sport too seriously (especially when VT is down).

But a little yelling is mild by comparison to some other fans. Recently it was reported that a Cleveland Browns fan attacked a 9-year-old Jets fan for wearing a Jets jersey. Really? An adult physically assaulted a child over the jersey he was wearing. Pathetic.

I love my teams (TCU and the Redskins). I want them to win and hate to see them lose. But, it isn’t life and death. The world will go on no matter how they perform on the field. It’s a game meant to be entertaining. But unfortunately, the game loses some if it’s entertainment value when the fans take things too far.
