A new poll out this week showed Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell taking back the lead of Democrat Creigh Deeds.
In the Public Policy Polling survey, McDonnell opened up a six point advantage, 49% to 43%. That number is significant for two reasons: it’s outside the margin of error and it is very close to the 50% mark.
Two other things stuck out about this poll. First, 86% of the respondents say they are solidly behind their candidate, leaving only 14% willing to change their mind. Also, the number of undecideds is somewhat low for this stage of the race. The PPP poll has it pegged at 8%. That doesn’t give the Deeds campaign a lot of room to grow.
We are at the early stages of this campaign and a lot could change between now and November. However, I am not ready to dismiss this poll outright. PPP, which is a Democratic polling firm out of Raleigh, NC, was the most accurate poll in the Democratic primary last month. That tells me that they have a very strong grasp of the Virginia electorate.
The poll also surveyed participants on the races for lt. governor and attorney general. I’ll give my take on the poll for those races tomorrow.
