New attack ads highlight competitiveness of 5th, 9th district races

Today we have more evidence, as both Rick Boucher and Robert Hurt have released new attack ads.

Boucher’s new ad came out a couple of days ago and goes after Delegate Morgan Griffith’s voting record in Richmond.

Hurt’s ad was just released today, six days before the election day, and is something of a rehash of several of the claims the Hurt campaign and national Republicans have made against Congressman Tom Perriello. The crux of the ad is simple: Tom Perriello is a puppet of Democratic leadership and President Obama.

The timing of Hurt’s ad is telling, as it will start airing just two days before President Obama arrives in Charlottesville to campaign for Perriello.

Generally, by this stage in a campaign, the candidates have shifted back to more positive, image ads that serve as the closing argument for a candidate. It’s the final pitch of why you should vote for them, rather than against their opponent. And, if the polling showed either the 5th and 9th district races as ad one deal, I would imagine we would have seen ads like that.

Instead, the air war appears likely to continue all the way to election day. Buckle in, we have six more days to go!
