National issues dominate Virginia elections

The general election campaign has officially begun, and it appears our elections will be dominated by what is happening at the national level.

Yes, I know Tip O’Neill famously said, “All politics is local.” But, that may not be the case in the 2009 Virginia elections.

So far, our campaign has been dominated with names like Pelosi, Bush, and Obama. And it’s coming from both sides.

The Deeds campaign is trying everything they can do to tie Republican Bob McDonnell to former President George W. Bush. They’ve run several ads highlighting a McDonnell quote that appeared to praise Bush’s economic “revival.”

Of course, the McDonnell team is happy to return the favor. They’ve lumped Deeds with Obama and DNC Chairman and Virginia Governor Tim Kaine at every turn.

Sure, the campaigns are highlighting their specific plans for Virginia and perhaps those issues will get more attention as Nov. 3rd approaches. But for now, it seems this race is more about Bush and Obama than Deeds and McDonnell and their ideas for our roads, economy, and budget.
