I continue to find it interesting that the Democrats are even half aligning themselves with independent Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman.
Lieberman has been a constant thorn in the side of the Democrats for years dating back to the days of Bill Clinton when he publicly scolded the president for his bad behavior with Monica Lewinsky.
He then was defeated in the Democratic primary for his reelection bid and ran as an independent, winning the general election campaign fairly easily. Since then, he’s been on something of a warpath against his former party.
He generally votes with Republicans on issues of national defense. He endorsed John McCain over Barack Obama for president. And now, he’s threatening to derail health care reform.
As a journalist, I’m not weighing on whether Lieberman’s actions were right or not. I’m only amazed that the Democrats continue to keep him around. I know they need him to reach the magical filibuster proof 60-vote majority. But, they have to do A LOT of compromising in order to maintain that.
I wonder how long that will last?
