Virginia Tech has some new uniforms for the big game against Boise State on Monday. They were designed by Nike, with input from some Hokies, and they feature a different color scheme for the Hokies… BLACK.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m no fan of maroon and orange. Frankly, I think it’s an odd color combination. But, I’m a traditionalist. If your school colors are pea green and salmon, you might look silly on the field, but it’s your color. I say wear it with pride. Embrace it. Don’t run from it.
So, that’s why I was disappointed to see a black uniform for the Hokies. Yes, it had some orange and maroon on it. But, that was just enough to make it look like a Halloween costume.
When you are flipping through the channels on Monday and stop on the game, will you instantly be able to recognize that the Hokies are on the field? You could if they were in their distinctive white, maroon, and orange uniforms. Instead, they’ll look more like the LA Raiders.
I hope this is a one time event and the Hokies’ traditional colors will return for the rest of the season. But, if they have to wear them again, I’d suggest Halloween. That would be a perfect fit!
