Get ready for a LONG Oscars broadcast

Was anyone else a little annoyed by the Academy Award nominations yesterday?

The Academy decided to nominate 10 films for best picture instead of the normal five. The reason, so I’ve read, is to build interest in more films and in the Oscars broadcast. I guess the theory goes that more people will watch to see if their favorite film wins. Also, Hollywood experts expected that by nominating 10 films we would see a more diverse list of films. And while one animated film did make the cut, the rest were quite similar to what we normally see in this category.

But, I have a different take on this new idea. Doesn’t highlighting 10 films mean an already long, drawn out affair will be even longer and more boring? I’ll bet yes.

And, in essence the Academy is saying 10 films deserve the honor of best film. That’s a lot. Wouldn’t the Academy be better off just telling me which films I shouldn’t watch from last year? That would be easier.

The Oscars broadcast is usually something I look forward to each year. But, I’m not sure the 2010 show will be on my viewing list.
