First day of class leaves me feeling old

I felt really, really, really old today.

I kicked off the fall semester today with 25 new Virginia Tech students in my broadcast writing class. We had a conversation about current events. That included everything from world and national leaders to state issues to sports.

We even branched into entertainment including the opening of the casino at the Greenbrier. I asked them about some of the celebrities who attended the opening. They knew Ben Affleck and his wife, West Virginia native Jennifer Garner. But, when I said Barbara Eden all I got were crickets. There was even more silence when I said Raquel Welch. Crickets. One student did ask if she was the “wig lady.”

Just as a test, I asked if they knew who Sophia Loren was. And all I got were black stares. WOW!

All the sudden I felt like was 80 standing before a group of teenagers. Talk about a slap of reality!
