Don’t believe the Vick autograph session is a charity

Earlier today, I posted a question on my WSLS Facebook page: Is Michael Vick really coming to Blacksburg to raise money for himself or for the Humane Society of Montgomery County?

As you may have heard, Vick will be signing autographs at the Virginia Tech Bookstore Saturday. It’s $25 an autograph if you buy a ticket in advance and $30 at the door. It’s his first appearance at Tech since his conviction for dog fighting.

So far, Vick’s managers have only said that a donation in the four figure range will be given to the Humane Society. They will commit to nothing more than $1,000. Even though there’s the potential for him to earn roughly $10,000 if they sell at 400 tickets to the event.

But, by floating that some of the proceeds will be going to the Humane Society, this event is taking on the feel of a charity event. Which, obviously, given the answers we’ve gotten so far, it is not.

Let’s get back to my Facebook posting. I got dozens of comments, and most were against Vick and his appearance at Virginia Tech this weekend. And, perhaps the best advice from those comments was this: if you want to make a donation to the Humane Society skip the Vick autograph event and write the check directly to the Humane Society. At least then you’ll know exactly where your money is going.

If you want a Vick autograph, then pay the ticket price. Just don’t assume the bulk of that money will be going anywhere but to Vick and his handlers.
