Decoration superstitions have me a little worried this year

We have an old tradition in my family related to our Christmas decorations. My mother has told me for years that you have to take down your decorations before January first or risk a year of bad luck.

I’m not an overly superstitious person, but for some reason I have never felt it necessary to tempt fate on this one. So every year I make sure my decorations are down before New Year’s Day. At my house, that’s not easy task as I put up 6 Christmas trees, dozens of wreathes, 12 stockings, and more than 30 garlands. There’s a lot going on!

This year, as always, I got all of my indoor decorations down in time to meet this arbitrary deadline. But, the weather, including the 16 inches of snow, keep me from taking down the exterior garlands, wreathes, and bows. And, I still haven’t been able to take them down. Heck, snow still covers my entire backyard.

So, as we begin this new year, I have to admit, I am slightly nervous. Wish me luck that it was enough to take down everything inside. Otherwise, 2010 may be a long year!
