Today, it was announced that the Old Southwest Neighborhood in Roanoke City was awarded the title of 2010 Best National Neighborhood of the Year by Neighborhoods USA.
This is a great honor that Old Southwest won in part based on its annual Holiday Parlor Tour.
I am a former resident of Old Southwest. For three years I lived on Allison Ave, just a block from Highland Park and for another three years I lived on Woods Ave. on the other side of Franklin Ave.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time in both locations. The neighbors were great, the proximity to downtown can’t be beat, and the historic homes are one of a kind. A lot of credit for the feel of the neighborhood goes to Old Southwest Inc, the neighborhood association. It’s a very active group in promoting Old Southwest, organizing neighborhood activities, and ensuring that Old Southwest’s interests are well represented to city leaders.
Frankly, I can’t think of a better neighborhood to receive this distinction. Congrats to Old Southwest and its residents and leaders.
