Candidates campaign at game, but which is the bigger Hokie fan?

All it takes is a football game get the candidates to break out of their traditional blue and red ties.

Democrat Creigh Deeds and Bob McDonnell were both campaigning at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg tonight and both were sporting Hokie colors.

Deeds had a dark maroon tie and McDonnell a bright orange tie. Both politically correct by Hokie standards.

And while I am sure both are pulling for Virginia Tech tonight, only one of the two claims to have VT as his favorite school in the commonwealth. During my profile pieces with the candidates, the final question to both was Tech or UVA?

Deeds said, “Virginia Tech. I love UVA.” I questioned him a bit, reminding him that his Senate district includes UVA to which he replied, “I represent UVA in the State Senate. I have a daughter that went there. I grew up a VT fan. I grew up wearing orange and maroon. I grew up rooting for the Hokies and I can’t change.”

McDonnell was a little less definitive in his answer. He laughed and said, “I love all Virginia schools.” I pointed out that that was a politician’s answer to which McDonnell said, “Well, they were both my clients. I’m a Notre Dame grad, so I would root for either one of them, unless they’re playing Notre Dame.” But what if VT and UVA are playing each other? McDonnell said, “May the best team win. That’s the best I can do on that. You’re not getting me into that hornet’s nest.”
