Campaign for governor starts early

Traditionally, the fall campaign doesn’t truly begin until Labor Day. In fact our area is usually host to that kick-off with the annual Labor Day Parade and Festival in Buena Vista, followed by another parade the same day in Covington.

But, 2009 appears to be different. Republican Bob McDonnell has spent all of August crisscrossing the commonwealth in an RV hitting every city, town, and hamlet talking about jobs and the economy.

Democrat Creigh Deeds had his own RV tour and just last week gave what his campaign touted as a major address. That speech was widely viewed as a restart to the struggling Deeds campaign.

And now this week, both Deeds and McDonnell have released new television ads.

What does all of this mean? First, we have a highly competitive race for governor with a lot on the line for both parties. And second… it’s only going to get more intense as the weeks go on.
