Breaking news! Today, Donald Trump endorsed Mitt Romney for president. This was headline news in many of the major news outlets in the country and there was an army of reporter standing by to catch every word Trump uttered.
Does make a difference to you? Does The Donald’s stamp of approval make you more likely to vote for former Gov. Romney?
I hope not!
I’m not sure why anyone should care what a celebrity star thinks about politics. Next, we’ll be hearing all about Brittney Spears’ choice for president! To be clear, Trump isn’t the first celebrity to make an endorsement. Last cycle, Chuck Norris endorsed Mike Huckabee and Oprah endorsed Barack Obama. And in both cases, I again asked, who cares?
With Trump, at least he has a vast business background. But, so do many, many business people. That doesn’t mean that I look to them for political wisdom. And with Trump business sense comes his baggage, which is CONSIDERABLE.
Before the Trump endorsement today, Andrea Mitchell asked Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels about a possible endorsement in the GOP race. Daniels’ response was pitch perfect. He told Mitchell that he couldn’t imagine why someone would care what he thought and that he would be happy to work with any of the candidates to advance the Republican agenda and his model in Indiana. This is coming from an accomplished politician who served in the House of Representatives, was President Bush’s Budget Director, and has adeptly led Indiana as governor for two terms.
That is the type of leader whose opinion might be worth something. Yet, his ego isn’t big enough to think that he can be a kingmaker. Perhaps The Donald could take a cue from him.
