Blurring the line between politics and pop culture

We saw a further blurring of the line between politics and pop culture tonight.

There was a time when it was big news when a presidential candidate appeared on a talk show like Jay Leno or David Letterman. I remember then-candidate Bill Clinton’s saxophone-playing appearance on the Arsenio Hall show back in 1992. That was considered groundbreaking and edgy.

Since then, it’s been more and more common for politicians to branch into these type of shows. John McCain was a regular on Letterman’s show. In fact, the late night shows are almost a given for presidential candidates.

President Obama got some grief earlier this year when he made a guest appearance on The View. Some people called it unpresidential.

Tonight it was Sarah Palin’s turn as she was a guest in the audience on Dancing with the Stars. She even gave her take on the competition, which of course features her daughter Bristol as one of the contestants.

What will be next, Mitt Romney as a contestant on the Amazing Race? Or how about Harry Reid on Big Brother?

That would be Must See TV!

Harry Reid on Big Brother would definitely be must see TV.  I could do without anymore Palin exposure though…
