The Allen campaign released its fundraising numbers for the fourth quarter of 2011 and it was another impressive haul. The campaign says it raked in just over 1 million dollars during the three month period.
According to the release, that means Allen has raised $4.5 million dollars total, of which he has spent more than half with just over 2 million dollars still left in the bank.
A million or more a quarter during the year leading up to an election is strong. It strengthened Allen’s standing in the GOP primary; although, it didn’t allow him to completely clear the field. And, it has enabled his to keep pace with his likely Democratic opponent, Tim Kaine, who has also raised large chunks of money based on his national ties from his time as DNC chair and his close relationship to President Obama and his team.
All of this underscores what we already knew: this Senate race between two Virginia titans will likely be one of the fiercest in the country and likely one of the most expensive in Virginia history (if not the most expensive).
