A BIG weekend in Roanoke

If you live in Roanoke for any length of time, you are bound to hear a common complaint: there’s nothing to do here. In my almost 13 years here, I’ve heard it hundreds of times.

Well, to all those who think Roanoke is boring… this weekend is for you. There are so many things going on, you’d never be able to do it all. Here are just a few of the events.

- 30th Annual Strawberry Festival. If you like strawberries… where it’s strawberry shortcake, strawberry shakes, strawberry smoothies, or chocolate covered strawberries… they have it all. This is one of my favorite events every year. It started Friday and runs on Saturday too. It’s at Elmwood Park and all proceeds will benefit the Community School.
- 31st Annual Chili Cook-off. This is also a great, annual event. It’s in downtown Roanoke and proceeds from it benefit the Greenvale School.
- The Derby Day Gala. This is the second year for this event held at Rockledge on Mill Mountain. It’s put on by EventZone and supports the group’s Arts Scholarship. Tickets are $100 and well worth it.
- Fork and Cork. This is a wine festival with food, entertainment, art, and, of course plenty of wine. It’s in Blacksburg and tickets are $20 at the door.
- “Shakespeare in Hollywood” will be performed at William Fleming High School Saturday night at 7:30pm.

And that’s really just the beginning. The weather is supposed to be great, so get out there are take advantage of some great events! Have a good weekend.
