Tonight, we hosted the candidates for the 9th Congressional District for our second candidate exchange.
Here are a few observations about the exchange:
- This was the first time Rick Boucher and Morgan Griffith had ever met. This is surprising to me, given their long tenures in the office and close proximity to one another.
- It didn’t take long for the two to build a rapport. Their conversations before the exchange and during the commercial breaks were cordial and friendly.
- In fact, this exchange was a little less heated than last week’s 5th District debate. During that debate, the candidates came in with set talking points that they made numerous times throughout the session. Boucher and Griffith had fewer talking points, and stuck more to the actual questions.
- The candidates did engage each other on two issues: Griffith residency and Cap and Trade. Both have been hot button issues in this campaign and it seemed both sides were ready to talk about them.
- A half hour flies by! At the end, I would have loved another 30 seconds to discuss Cap and Trade. The final question was directed to Boucher, since it was about his controversial vote in favor of the energy bill. He spoke for just over a minute and Griffith had 26 seconds to respond before I had to say goodnight. Timing can be difficult.
Just a few observations. And now the countdown is on to election day. Just 10 days to go!
