Today was another great day out on the field. I mean, who wouldn’t want to play with puppies? Angela, one of our reporters, wanted to cover the story of eight puppies who were left at a dumpster in Franklin County for trash. Yes, a dumpster. The night before a 6-12 inch snow forecast. As if that wasn’t cruel and disgusting to begin with…it’s illegal.
So this person with no feelings decides to leave eight puppies crammed into a tub (with the lid on) at a dumpster. Luckily a good samaritan came by and heard the puppies and took action. This nice person with a conscious took the puppies home and kept them warm for the night, taking them to the animal shelter the next day.
The shelter then placed the puppies in foster care with a woman who has a farm with lots of room to spare. We visited the puppies in the barn, where they were romping around like they owned the place. And chewing on everything in site…like the camera tripod.
These puppies are little furry puffballs. A mix of Australian Shepherd and Lab. Adorable. It’s impossible to think that someone thought they were disposable. They were named with a chocolate theme, because the majority of the puppies have a chocolate brown color. Willie (Wonka), Godiva, Ghirardelli, and Goobers, to name a few. Chokito was my favorite, and I would have adopted him in a heartbeat if animals were allowed in my apartment. Thankfully in the past two weeks since they were found, all have been adopted but Chokito. And he has adoptions pending.
Of course cute little puppies will be easily adopted. But what of the bigger cats and dogs? Who will love them? And since when is it okay to abandon animals to die? Especially in these harsh, bitter winter conditions. It’s not okay.
The Humane Society has to accept animals. They will gladly accept all animals on the spot, you just actually have to take them to the Humane Society. Or else they might not be found in time. I believe these animals have a right to life, and should be treated humanely. Hopefully with more awareness, this issue will be brought to light. And something will be done about it.

Thank you Melissa for writing a fine article reminding us to spay and neuter pets. Not doing so results in the cruel and heartless actions that your reporting clearly shows.

The Story “A Furry Surprise” left me with a warm feeling in that the puppies are warm, safe, and will have happy homes. I can just picture them frolicking in the barn! I would love to have seen pictures of them especially “chokito”. At the same time angry that someone is capable of treating animals like trash. We recently lost our beloved “Fritz” and thanks to this story the first place I will be looking for a new puppy will be the humane society or a no kill shelter.
