Liberty Station Lives Again

Today in the morning meeting I heard our reporter Angela mention a restaurant in the Bedford area re-opening.  Hmmm sounds promising….I like food.  So I tagged along with Angela and photog Jeff.  Let me tell you I was in for it.  And it was yummy.

I realized that as a Senior at Virginia Tech, I know nothing about the Bedford area.  And that goes for Roanoke as well.  How is that possible you may ask?  Apparently at Virginia Tech we sort of live in the bubble of Blacksburg.  Too busy to dare to venture out.  But today I ventured out.

So we’re driving to what seemed like the middle of nowhere (I am from NoVa after all), and we pull into the Liberty Station.  What used to be the Olde Liberty Station had a bad fire in mid September, resulting in a total renovation of the restaurant.  But thank goodness they renovated.

The place is like stepping into a time warp.  You really feel like you’re in the old train station…first being greeted by a hostess at an old ticket counter.  The restaurant did have to order many new tables and chairs, but they were able to save some stuff from before the fire…like this really cool canvas mural of trains.

Just by the buzz of the customers you could tell everyone had missed the restaurant and were thrilled it has opened again.  Many customers greeted the owner like an old friend they had missed.  It was great to see a town come out to support such a beloved landmark.

Oh and the food.  The food was amazing.  Hands down I recommend the catfish.  The cheescake brownie wasn’t too shabby as well.  And as we ate two trains sped by…talk about adding to the atmosphere.

You’ve written a fine restaurant critique that entices us to include a tasty visit on our next drive through from OKC.

I’m sitting here in NOVA, snow bound with cabin fever coming on quick.  After reading this article I want to jump in the car, take a roadtrip to Bedford and lunch at Liberty Station.  Now I’m not normally a catfish eater, but I might just have to try it once again… but cheesecake first please.
