Budget cuts happen. Schools have been in crisis mode for sometime now. Maybe it is because I’m an adult now and a reporter that I’m realizing just how bad things are getting.
I’ve attended meeting after meeting in the last couple of weeks concerning the budget. I’ve spoken with teachers and administrators, especially in Roanoke City, about what could be on the chopping block.
It wasn’t until today that I saw it all.. laid out in front of me. 70 K-8 teachers could be let go. SEVENTY! Preschool could be eliminated. At least one whole school could be closed. Class sizes could get bigger and special ed programs could be at risk.
I keep reminding myself to ask my mother if they went through anything like this back when I was a kid in school. I do remember my art teacher had her own classroom…now many art teachers have a cart. That is is… a cart.
I have witnessed so much passion from educators in the area and it breaks my heart to see everyone having to deal with such difficult economic times. I just wonder when things are going to start to turn around. I hope soon.
