This has got to be the question I am asked most. I have a bit of a commute each morning so I get up a little earlier than I would have to if I lived in Roanoke. I get up at 2 a.m. but typically hit the snooze button once or twice. I try to get as much done the night before-- lay out my clothes, pack my breakfast and lunch, etc. It's not easy but planning does help!
It was a challenge at first. When we were asked to blog, I have to admit I resisted. I thought, what am I going to blog about? My life consists of work and being with my family. Writing about my growing daughter would have been easy but at this age, she doesn't have a choice. I thought when she's older she might not appreciate me putting her growing pains or my reaction to them out there. I decided food and anything related to cooking-- my next love-- would be the next best thing. If something unrelated to food or cooking tickles my taste buds, I might write about that too.
Of course!! I love when viewers send me e-mails about the latest dish Patrick and I brought up on the morning show or a recipe I put on my blog. I still can't believe how many people wrote in when we talked about how to cook a turkey on a charcoal grill. My dad's lesson on that was a big hit!
Yes, I can easily eat a spicy Indian dish or leftover dinner at 9:30 each morning. Keep in mind I get up really early and have breakfast at 3 a.m.. By 9:00, I'm ready for something other than cereal.
As much as I love to cook, I love to eat out. One of my favorite places is Nawab in Roanoke. It's got the best Seafood Tikka Misala I've ever had.
I have a few go-to dishes that frequently make their way onto our dinner table-- mozzarella stuffed turkey meatloaf, wild mushroom lasagna, seafood in spicy broth-- but I like to experiment. I'm addicted to the Food Network. I TiVo all of my favorite shows and watch when I can, then make my favorites. Fortunately I've made more great meals than bad so my husband doesn't mind being my guinea pig.
I'm a bit adventurous. I went skydiving while I was a reporter in Mississippi. It was a tandem jump with the Army's Golden Knights. It rocked!!!
I spend my time off with my family. I worked weekends for eight years so I have a great appreciation for now having off the same days as my husband. We love to cook, of course (my husband is a great sous chef) and travel. Traveling with an infant makes it a bit more interesting (and challenging) but she better get used to it now!!
Patrick and I worked weekends together, now mornings. We really do get along. We don't mind giving each other a hard time which often makes us crack up on the morning show. It's great... I never know what he's going to tell about me (like my fruit breakfast on the set) but enjoying your co-anchor sure makes it a whole lot easier to come to work so early.
Our other child... Dewey, yes. He's a 2-year-old Sheltie named after Boston Red Sox great Dwight Evans. He's smaller than most shelties but is more loving and loyal than any dog I've ever seen. Yes, he's spoiled!!!
If she wasn't getting up early to bring you the news as morning anchor on WSLS 10, Dawn would be spending her evenings cooking up cuisine in a restaurant. But since she's not a chef this blog is as close as she gets.
