The art of opening presents

Do you tear into a box, simultaneously tearing the paper and throwing it aside? Or are you more of a gently pry the paper off the box type of opener—the type that wants to preserve the the sheet of decorated paper for another purpose? I’m more in the middle and last night, as we helped my daughter celebrate her 3rd birthday, I wished she was more of a tear into it and see what it is quickly kind of kid.

She gently tore the paper, bit by bit. Even when she could clearly see it was a new Dr. Seuss book inside, she’d reply to my inquiry the same each time. “Wait Mommy, I have to finish opening it,” she’d say. I secretly thought to myself, I wish I’d wrapped them all in one box rather than individually. Then she looked through the book, telling me she “had to read the book” instead of move on to the next package as I’d suggested.

Thank goodness she hasn’t figured out how after a lonnnnnnnggggggg day, and less five hours sleep, I sometimes turn more page than one when I’m trying to get through the umpteenth book she wants me to read to her before bed time. By the way, her bedtime is a good hour after what I wish mine could be. As parents, we’ve all been there.

But last night, as I sat in bed listening to her still try to chat with me via monitor, I was grateful she took the time to see what we thought enough to pick out for her. I was grateful she enjoyed every moment of it. I’m grateful my 3-year-old could remind me in that moment, to enjoy these days. Because if it goes as quickly as these last three years have, it will be gone before I know it.
