Looking for a good pizza

One of my fondest memories as a kid was Friday night pizza. My dad would always go to the place called Pizza John’s to get pizza and a salad. It was delicious!!!!

My husband LOVES pizza… I mean he could eat it every night if I agreed. He has fond memories of pizza too. When he was growing up, his father would make pizzas for the family.  I always grill it outside in the summer when I can pull tomatoes and basil from my garden. We love that but since I can’t do that right now, I just want a good family place to go to get great pizza. I want to continue the pizza tradition.

I am crossing my fingers I may soon have a chance!! Not that there’s no good pizza in the NRV… but what I’ve had is just not what I’m looking for. I can’t describe it exactly, I just know it when I taste it… A crust that’s thin but not too thin… A sauce that’s not too sweet… And when I get mushrooms on my pizza, I want them fresh, not from a can!!

There’s a new place opening… I feel like I’ve been stalking this place before it’s even opened. It’s called Sal’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria. I as told there’s a location In Radford that’s wonderful. I’ve been salivating as I wait for it to open… It was supposed to open in the summer at the new First and Main but hasn’t yet. I called yet again this morning and a guy, presumably Sal… answered. He said they’re waiting for inspection and hope to open this week.

I usually don’t go to new restaurants until they’ve had some time to work out the kinks… I may have to make an exception this time!!!

Dawn - the best pizza in Roanoke can be found on Apperson Drive in Salem at the Pizza Pasta Pit.  Their pizzas are baked in wood fire ovens, the sauce is perfect, the crust is thin and the cheese is gooey.  Try it, you’ll love it.

I am from New York City and born and raised in a jewish and italian neighborhood.  I am used to immigrants coming right off the boat of italy and working in the family pizzeria.  So I am used to real fine pizza.

When we came to roanoke/Salem, we tried many pizza restaurant and many failed my critical taste.  There is one that not only stands out but I refer my family and friends to it.  Especially when they come down and visit.

This place is Mama Maria’s in Salem, VA.  They are consistency great and have wonderful authentic italian food.  I always tell the manager how pleased I am and how after 8 1/2 years of patronizing this place, I will continue to recommend this place.
