Haiti tragedy hits close to home

When I heard of the destruction in Haiti after the massive earthquake last night, I immediately thought of a local woman I interviewed several years ago who started an orphanage in Port au Prince. her name is Vanessa Carpenter.

I spoke with Vanessa this morning. She and the people she work with were not spared from the destruction. As far as she knows right now, there have been no deaths within her organization although one boy was hurt and some people are still missing. Needless to say, Vanessa—who was supposed to fly to Haiti this week—is working hard to collect and get supplies, especially medical supplies to Port au Prince.
