Baby Talk: Having a baby on facebook

I’m not quick to embrace all technology has to offer. When it comes to cameras, yes. But when it comes to things like facebook and twitter, yes, even blogging, I’m not one to jump on the bandwagon rather easily. I blog for work, it’s part of my job. But when it comes to something like facebook, it took MONTHS for my friends to convince me to sign up before I finally caved. And even now, after doing so, I don’t spend a fraction of the time on it others do. I mean, after being registered for almost a year, I posted my first pictures in April.

Suffice to say, my friends were shocked to see me posting updates the morning my son was born. Man have things changed. Gone are the days, I guess when mothers give their husband’s or close friends a list of people to call to share the good news. We have Facebook.

My husband and I were sitting in a room at the hospital. The nurses were checking me out and I was on the phone. First with a friend who anchors the late night news in Arizona… a time zone in which it was safe to call someone at such a crazy hour EST, then updating things via my phone, on facebook. I remember telling my husband I just wanted to tell someone. He understood that meant, share our news with others… the two of us already knew what was going on.

We both began posting status reports. From contractions to clues on the baby’s name (Roanoke was seeing heavy flooding that night) to the moment I had to put down the phone to head to the operating room… I was all about facebook.

It made me feel good to hear a friend tell me later on she was glued to her page, waiting to read what was next.
