So the Christmas displays are up and radio stations are playing Christmas music. Too much too soon? In year’s past, I would have said yes. But this year, I am actually enjoying it.
The reason is simple… my growing family. The meaning behind the holidays have always been meaningful to me but this year there is a bit more excitement because we’re teaching our children, at least my 2-year-old (the baby obviously doesn’t have a clue… he’ll smile at a blinking light any time and indulging in a big turkey is beyond him at this point) about what it all means. She gets more than we think sometimes and more importantly, the holidays—Thanksgiving, Christmas—give us a chance to establish the traditions I always dreamed of sharing with my family and those my husband brings to the table from his family.
For me, it’s much more than shopping for gifts and the trees on display at the store. But seeing them and getting the sometimes silly songs stuck in my head after hearing them on the radio (“I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas” comes to mind) is just a small reminder that puts a smile on my face and makes me eager to enjoy the season longer, not just for a day.
