The Drive: I said early on that Virginia Tech is one of eight teams in the nation that have a chance to win it all. Not that they will, or they should—but they have a chance. It’s the same chance as Florida, Alabama, USC and the rest. It will all rest on a few bounces of the ball. All of these teams are super talented, but which one can get the breaks when they need them. Clearly, Virginia Tech played SO WELL against Miami they didn’t need a bounce. They got one—-a pair of Tyrod plays….against Nebraska. When that moment comes again, Tech fans—you will know it. And literally, you can trace a national championship back to one or two plays that could have sunk you. When I covered the Tennessee national title with Tee Martin, they had a game probably long since forgetton—where they were trailing Arkansas late..and the Razorbacks had the ball. All they needed to do was kill clock..the game was almost over. But the quarterback stumbled…tried too hard to make the handoff instead of falling on it….fumble….and the whole season turns. Hopes stay alive.
We will see.
The Fairway: How awesome has Salem’s defense been? WOW. Three straight home game shutouts. Stomping undefeated opponents. Only Northside gave them a legit scare to this point. And of course..down the road is Amherst. Boy..are the Lancers ever talented. That should be a war. But first things first, Salem will have to contend with Christiansburg, who under Tim Cromer is also perfect so far.
The Green: Is anybody glued to the Major League Baseball playoffs? Anybody? As a Phillies fan, I’m all about them. But I can’t seen to get sucked into the rest. I guess we’ll see if some drama draws me in. Not yet, though.
The Jar: Tim Tebow—-Florida legend..of course. LSU tonight…post-concussion? If he does what I think he’s gonna do, the legend grows.
