The Drive: Tom Watson won what became known at “The Duel In the Sun” over Jack Nicklaus at Turnberry for the Open Championship in 1977. 32 Years later, the guy played turn back the clock…firing a -5 65 to top the leaderboard for much of the day. It took at Miguel Angel Jimenez 66 foot birdie putt on 18 to best him, with a 64. The guy has five British Open titles, and I think we all realize it will be difficult for him to keep up this pace…but on this day…...the golfing world once again truly belonged to the 59 year old legend.
The Fairway: Did you see seven time champ Lance Armstrong cut a tire in Stage 12? Here’s how you can tell the guy’s still got it—-no panic…they change the tire like it was a NASCAR pit stop…and like a well oiled machine..four of his teammates surround him..and they start charging back to make up the ground. Next thing you know…it’s all back to normal..and the stage remains set for his run at number 8. We all know this begins Sunday..when the Alps stages begin.
The Green: I was thrilled to see Gator Boxing find a new home at the YWCA! I got up there tonight to check out the new digs—and it is a great third floor gym..complete with viewing balcony that actually will be great if the place can host competitions. It took some extra work—including a bucket truck..to get the ring and its supports up there, but it looks great and will be a great place to go work out. More importantly, this is a Christian-based, not-for-profit organization that helps challenged youth. Now they have a new, stable home for the future.
