Tom Terrific at Turnberry and Number 7 Rejoins Society

The Drive:  What Tom Watson did at Turnberry was beyond comprehension. That would be like John McEnroe playing in the finals of the US Open…right now.  No, check that—how about Jimmy Connors. I think he’s nearly 60. It’s unthinkable that he could beat every golfer in the field but one. That said, he was a great champion, always tough in the clutch. Clean, crisp ball striker. Still is. Wow. Lots of folks are upset he didn’t win. I think we have to look at the whole four days and feel grateful we we alive to see that. Crazy.
The Fairway:  How strange is it to hear Lance Armstrong say he can’t win the Tour? That he’s not the best out there? To return after 3 1/2 years..and be the second best rider right now, is not shabby. But we have come to expect this guy to be the best, and somebody else has come along. Contador rides just like Lance—tough as nails in the mountains. Tough to take down a younger version of yourself!
The Green: Mike Vick is a free man. Here’s hoping he stays the course and puts his life back together. I can’t help but feel his path could be blocked by owners not wanting the headache. That said, he should have some life left in that quickly approaching 30 frame to be productive for somebody, doing something, for a couple of seasons at least. In the days of the “wildcat” offense…who better than Vick?  The guy makes elusive sound slow.
The Jar: Is anybody else just itching to get the college football season started?  I am only buoyed by the fact my beloved Phillies are on a tear!
