The Drive:
The Hokies first trip into enemy waters, in Greenville, North Carolina was eye-opening. The Pirates had ideas of pillaging the ranked Hokies ship, and it was an 89-yard, impose-your-will drive that eventually turned away the purple trouble. If you haven’t been to East Carolina, they used to run out of a wooden Pirate ship. I’m told now it’s an inflatable skull. Bummer. I’ve always like woodworking. Anyway, the Hokies found out they can make a bushel full of errors but still possess the talent and perseverance to prevail. You can look at that two ways—you know this already—so let’s hope they are looking at it the winning way for the future.
The Fairway:
Rex Grossman is the Redskins starting quarterback. I’m a Rex supporter because he’s a University of Florida product. A Steve Spurrier recruit who got the raw deal of trying to run Ron Zook’s offense in the SEC. Christiansburg’s offense is more complex than Ron Zook’s offense was back then…..OK. I digress. Don’t get me started on that chapter of Gators history… Spurrier left and it was a mess until Urban Meyer took over.
Anyway, this is a gunslinger quarterback who has learned to manage games. He can still make the big throws. And ask Chicago—he can manage games, too. He’s talented and fearless—sometimes to a fault. But in the NFL—which stands for “Not For Long”..you’d better be confident..or you will be history. I still question the Redskins offensive line. I don’t think its as improved as it showed against the NY Giants. Time will tell. Without it, Rex will likely be the Rex Chicago fans got frustrated with, and not the one who made plays to win games.
The Green:
High School football, a couple of weeks in. My teams to watch..or watch out for: Franklin County, Northside, Brookville, Patrick Henry, Rockbridge, Christiansburg…and toss in George Wythe. I really like that lucky seven. Are there more out there? You bet! But for now, I really like what those seven clubs are about.
The Jar:
Johnny Fontane: Sure, Mike, I’ll do anything for my Godfather. You know that.
