The Signing Day Blitz, Super Thoughts and a Social Media Complaint.

    The Drive:
In my 22 year on-air sports career, I have avoided covering the ‘verbals’..and the ‘leanings’...and all the other nonsense that surrounds the recruiting game. By putting that kind of stuff on television, I’m tossing fuel on an already red-hot furnace of manipulation, pressure and sleeze that has inundated the recruiting business. That’s right…it is a full time business for some, and it is serious business to college coaches around the nation trying to keep a paycheck. It’s not about what it used to be about anymore.  I wish I was wrong about that. So I report the SIGNINGS only, and give the congrats then.  Just my way, not the only way.

  The Fairway:
I’ve covered a couple of Super Bowls, and it is really a tough week to deliver current, interesting news out of there. A lot harder than a bowl week, for instance, because so many media end up making everything so vanilla. Really difficult to find original stuff when 5000 plus crews are crawling all over the joint. That said, the weather in Dallas is reason enough not to want to be there. I did the Detroit game, sounds about the same!  It wasn’t fun doing live shots at 1130 pm OUTSIDE of Ford Field cause security won’t let anyone in leading up to the game. Every time this week comes around I remember how hard this week really is to work. It would be a heck of a lot more fun to be a fan, that’s for sure.

  The Green:
Social Media is not anything I’m an expert with, but I must say, I get a little tired of this whole “Just sayin” crutch on facebook. People who say that are the same folks who say.. “No offense”...but….and they just go right ahead and offend you. When you blurt out “just sayin”...it says you can’t find an intelligent, eloquent way to make your argument, so you blurt out a statement, and verify it by vomiting out “Just sayin..”. Please. I read that stuff, and realize why so few people really should have a platform. It is what is wrong with our ‘watchdog” function of the media moving forward. Journalists are being replaced by bloggers, sources for facebook junkies, and none of these people have any credentials. When the watchdog goes out of the media, may God have mercy on all of our souls. “Just…..hahaha. Not on your life.

  The Jar:
Courage is not the absence of fear, but simply moving on with dignity despite that fear.
                                                                                      Pat Riley
