The Masters plays “turn back the clock’ on Thursday

  The Drive:
The guy shoots a -4 68….at Augusta. I think the world’s best golfer is just fine. I have no idea if he’s just fine at home, but he’s got it together between the ropes. What else is new. If he loses this tournament, nobody is going to point to mistress number whatever. Instead, a 5-month layoff from competitive golf and those crazy fast greens will be to blame.

  The Fairway:
Tom Watson can still play some golf. I thought the British, while not being a fluke, would be the only venue where he could pull that kind of performance off—simply because the terrain allows you to make up for being a shorter hitter.  Guess again. This guy has iron play to die for. If he can putt the whole weekend, look out.

  The Green:
...is exactly where I can tell if Phil Mickelson has a chance or not. If he putts well, he gains confidence in all other parts of his game. And those other parts include distance that rivals Tiger, iron play that can hold him up there with anyone..and the best short game in the business. BETTER than Tiger.

  The Jar:
Freddie Couples could easily win this tournament, if his back holds out. He’s the tournaments’ oldest outright leader. He also has a 23 tournament streak of making the cut in among the Georgia Pines. He knows the way to Butler Cabin…and every other nook and cranny on the golf course. You see, at Augusta, experience doesn’t just count for something—it means everything.

I am sorry to hear you say that. It is not all about Tiger. I realize you are comenting on day one. But who really wins? Billy Payne an the rest of the 18 th century thinkers, Swoosh with a comercial meant to sell shirts-and bring back the Tiger brand, remember Tiger said it was private!
Phil won it with good golf like a gentleman would. Hey Swoosh go Calaway!
