The Drive:
The Flyers last Stanley Cup(s)..the back to back 73-74 and 74-75 seasons. I remember being in the back of my parents car in Philadelphia on the night one of those Cups was clinched—-and on Bustleton Avenue in Philadelphia when we were stopped at a light—-streakers ran around our car. I remember my sister getting an eyeful! That was all the rage back then…but like the scene from Old School I think if you did that today, you would be running alone. Ah, the City of Brotherly Love!
The Fairway:
More Hockey—worth noting the Flyers have reached the finals and lost five times since! The years…75-76, 79-80, 84-85, 86-87..and 96-97. The last one was the Lindros series. Pretty sure the mid-80’s was the Ron Hextall era in goal. I remember Bernie Parent, of course..from the glory years of the 70’s, Bobby Clarke. Those were the days. Time for some new ice memories now.
The Green:
Well…Orlando, my gut pick to win the NBA, has fallen flat. Down three-oh to Boston, at least they managed a win. I’m guessing they can get one more win at home before Boston clinches in 6. I’ve been surprised at the Celtics, because frankly they didn’t play this way for much of the year. And Rondo has been the difference maker in three of the four games. He’s better than I could have ever imagined.
The Jar:
Lots of folks ‘round these parts bust on West Virginia, especially Hokies that don’t exactly like how WVU and Virginia Tech fans “get along.” I get that. But I’m weighing in that your average person there(not crazed WVU fan) has similiar experiences/value systems as what I was exposed to in the coal regions of Northeastern PA. So, I, for one, am giving the Wild and Wonderful state, a thumbs up tonight. That’s all of it!
