The Drive:
Golf fans don’t mind the summer so much. You’ve got the US Open, then the British..and both are squashed into the meat of the summer. But if you aren’t emotionally tied in..then what? My alma mater advanced to the World Series finals in both NCAA softball and NCAA baseball so that kept me focused until now…(even though the lost both…ugh.) Tour de Blood dopers? Not really a spectator sport. NFL and NBA collective bargaining agreement negotiations? I often wonder why the don’t put that stuff on, it’s got to be at least as interesting as CSpan. This year—I have the answer. World Cup Soccer. Live it, follow it…and most importantly…pick a squad or two that competes in a different pool than the US. That will keep you busy on lots of days. Then..wait for the British..and set your alarm, cause the best action comes in the weee hours of the morning.
The Fairway:
I’ve learned some ACC history this month, thanks to my buddy Sturg on the radio down in Clemson-town. He explained why so many Clemson fans are in a frenzy….hoping North Carolina gets their collective hats handed to them by the NCAA for the mess in that football program. Apparently..when Clemson got rung up back in the early 80’s—it was North Carolina that pressed the issue with the conference for additional sanctions—and the Tigers faithful have not forgotten. What comes around…....
The Green:
Please welcome back Maria Sharapova—-the 17 year old Russian phenom turned 24 year old comeback story…..to the Wimbledon finals. Sharapova underwent shoulder surgery that took nearly two years for her to recover fully from. Now back into a Grand Slam final, it’s nice the see one of the most photographed players on the tour…actually playing good tennis as well.
The Jar:
Doug: “Stu would like to invite you to his wedding.”
Stu: “Well only if you’re not busy.”
Phil: “Stu?”
Stu: “Well, maybe the Jonas Brothers are in town.”
Alan: “Nope, they’re in Raleigh, Durham that weekend.”—Hangover 2.
