The Drive: The Ryan Williams I’m watching might have as much impact on college football as anybody I’ve seen since Emmitt Smith. The guy is special, in lots of ways, and oh..by the way—he’s got company in the backfield with GW Danville product David Wilson. That young man may give the Hokies the greatest combination since Peanut Butter and Jelly got together.
The Fairway: I’m flabbergasted at what went down at the US Open. Roger Federer—not a good loser. Serena Williams—-going off, and not exactly apologizing afterwards. The value systems of sports always felt like they could hold out regular society. Let the rest of the world—-spew hate..there would always be sportsmanship….or so I thought. It needs to be a sanctuary, a place where the effort is equal to the outcome, where the grit means as much as the talent, where doing the right thing means more than just the scoreboard. It’s slipping away from us as we speak.
The Green: Mike Vick was put on the 53-man roster for the birds today, so he can beginning practicing again. No shocker that this coincides with McNabb’s injury. I told the newsroom Mike Vick would be the Eagles starting QB by week 4. Let’s see if my half-joke half-guess was right.
The Jar: I find the end of the golf season to be excruciating. The tournaments mean nothing. The majors are gone. Thanks goodness we’ve got…the NFL.
