Memories of Super Bowl Media Day and what a difference a couple of states makes….snow days?

The Drive:  Well, I’ve earned my Super Bowl stripes. The first one was in my first month of working my first job, when I got sent to Miami from Fort Pierce/West Palm Beach to do a Super Bowl Feature story. It was on souveniers, as the Bengals and 49ers were playing. Funny thing happened, though. The Miami riots broke out, and I was our reporter on the scene. Live shot in front of the Miami Heat Arena with a full riot squad behind me. Gunshots. Burning cars and buildings. Yeah, that was a nice start. Game, what game? Football? I just wanted to get home without major surgery to remove the lead from me.

The Fairway:  The second go-round was in Atlanta, for the Rams and Titans. I was working in Tennessee at the time and we were considered home media. WOW. I was in awe of how MUCH media there was. I’d covered NFL games, and even playoff games, and Bowl games—but this felt like the Olympics. My lasting memories of Atlanta for that game—the ice storm that hit. Freakish weather, and a half hour special outside the Georgia Dome—in freezing temperatures. That and the finish, the stretch..and one yard short.

The Green:  By the time my third one came around it was old hat…hahaha. Not really. Steelers versus Seahawks in Detroit. Another snowy, cold deal. But Ford Field was a beautiful indoor facility—like an indoor Camden Yards—-and the Steelers had been my beat from Harrisburg all year long, so it was both fun and easy. I remember doing a Penn State story on the Seattle receivers, and I also remember falling in love with the Telemundo network. I hope I don’t have to explain my reasons for this. Also, Pittsburgh players were really easy to deal with. One ,because I’d been along for the ride all year, and two..they were just appreciative of us—-as opposed to—say Philly..where the Media is the enemy. Not so in Pittsburgh. At least not while Bill Cowher was there.

The Jar:  I like the Saints in an upset.  35-31.  Can you feel the voodoo?  Finally…in Pennsylvania…you needed the arctic circle to land on you to get a full day off for snow. Usually just delayed…and the plows and cinder trucks would tear it up!
