The Drive:
My initial thoughts on the game—-were—-WOW, Lane Stadium north, YIKES, the Hokies are still asleep and the game is underway, LOOKOUT, Virginia Tech’s attack dogs are awake, and hungry—and SURPRISE, Boise really does have something special to pull this one off.
The Fairway:
Well, I guess plenty of folks will weigh in on what they saw, what happened, etc. On the first point, I was really, really impressed with the way both teams fans turned out. Boise had a big, solid following considering the distance. I mean, guessing now…maybe 10 or 15 thousand, one whole side of the lower level. Very nice. The Virginia Tech fans were crazed and crammed the joint to the roof. When Enter Sandman came on…I thought the place was going to crumble. Credit to Boise for looking that in the face and not blinking.
The start was the stuff of nightmare. Big games and young kids generally don’t mix..especially if it is there first one. That was the case, and Beamerball was a special teams mess for the first 15 minutes. But the Hokies didn’t panic and eventually the young crowd got their feet under them. Enough said.
The Hokies Tyrod Taylor proved to be a determined leader in getting Virginia Tech back in the mix. It would have been easy to mail the rest of that one in. Everything was going wrong…it was a snowball situation.
The finish was more than anything a credit to the grit and determination of a seasoned, experienced Boise State team. Moore never blinked. Frankly, he never really looked bothered. He rarely gets overly excited, either. Smiles, but doesn’t jump all over the place. Very controlled kid. I honestly thought when the missed the point blank field goal that they would fold. It’s easy to believe..when everything is going your way. But when you work and work..and then…get no payoff. I thought they might blink. They almost did, but the VT field goal that stretched the lead to 4 wasn’t enough. But you know that already.
The Green:
Boise State will likely run the table this season. They will likely play for a national championship. They will do so using Virginia Tech as a springboard.
Without this game, they would have never been considered. Now they will be—all season long, or until they drop one to the likes of New Mexico A & T Prep School.
The Jar:
I can live without waiting on an accident on 66 trying to get to DC. That’s 2 hours of my life I will never get back.
