Countdown is all but over for fall sports seasons

  The Drive:
There is no season that quite feels like college football. I knew this in Junior High, when my 7th grade teacher would live and die by the Penn State results. I understood it even more when I ran at Syracuse, and saw my first game in the Dome..and ‘Cuse upset a ranked Nebraska team. It was burned into my psyche forever when I finished my education at the University of Florida. Some guy named Emmitt Smith ran for the Gators back then. Well, it is here, and come Monday in DC, we will see if the Hokies are about to begin a very special season, or if its the Broncos year to get the shot they deserve. Everything begins anew.

  The Fairway:
Our 1st and 10 debut was a fun one. A couple of specials, then bam!—Showtime. Cave Spring, most impressive. Patrick Henry pulls away late. Christiansburg displays some weapons. Northside, the defending state champs, looked like defending state champs. This week, William Fleming debuts the new stadium, and the new coach in Lee Johnson. I looked in on both EC Glass and William Fleming’s practices today. These two teams have SIZE.  Lots of it. And speed. Plenty. This will be fun to watch.

  The Green:
I’m OK with the US Open without Serena. That tournament is bigger than any one player. It should open things up for one of the Russians, or sister Venus. In the men’s draw, I’m not sure how much to expect from Roddick since he’s coming off Mono. Yeah, Mono. Yuk. But Nadal is a blast to watch, the guy plays tennis like most coaches would like their players to play football. With reckless abandon. Nice.

  The Jar:
Great spirits have often encountered violent opposition from weak minds.    Albert Einstein
